And So The Planning Begins . . .

Kaila is only 3 weeks old and we’re already starting to plan for her 1st birthday party. Crazy huh?
I’m not sure how it is in other places around the world but in Hawaii a baby’s first birthday is a pretty big deal. However, if it were up to me, I would prefer to have a small party at home since she won’t remember it anyway. DH, on the other hand, feels that since we threw big parties for Kacie and Kiana it’s only fair that we do the same for Kaila. He doesn’t want any hard feelings when the girls get older.
So today I called the Hawaii Okinawa Center to reserve our date and can you believe it . . . my first and second choice of dates were already taken! We’re talking about October 2010! I guess we’re not the only ones planning early.
How did you celebrate your child’s first birthday?

Wow, that’s so crazy!
We did have a party, and used a room at our church since our apartment is so small. All the grandparents came and a few friends with children. I got balloons from the dollar store and made cupcakes… that was the sum total of the party!
When he turned 2 we were traveling so we had dinner out (all adults plus the birthday boy) and no other party. Poor kid!
I think we’ll make up for it this year by doing a train party. There is a small steam train here in town that you can rent for a party. We’ll do it there and hopefully since he’s 3 he’ll remember it!

We just did parties at home for both of them! If I lived in Hawaii I would not have been so proactive, and would not have ended up getting anything booked – so kudos for being on top of it even through your new baby tiredness!

I’m impressed that your already planning. We knew we’d be moving during the time of our son’s first birthday (from Europe back to the US) & we did something little but we just didn’t have the time for more.
For our daughter’s birthday we had a barbecue & invited our friends/neighbors & my sil/bil. No other family was around.
I say party like theirs no tomorrow! Help that little girl turn 1 in a fashion that is unlike any other. Oh & can I come? *g*

I know that first birthdays are a big deal for your culture. Here, not so much. But I did try.
I invited all my mommy friends who had children roughly DD’s age and my inlaws & brother/SIL too. Luckily only one of my friends could make it and after she insisted on seeing our rabbits she had to leave (severe allergies!) So it was just family.
I have lots of very cute happy pictures of DD on her first birthday.
Her second birthday I tried to keep small but I realized that her birthday was in the middle of Spring Break for all the kids. I wanted to have just 4 kids her age over, but instead I got those 4 and their older siblings too! I had planned a few games and then to walk to the playground…that didn’t work out either. DD kept trying to leave her party.
Birthdays 3-7 all resulted in melt-downs! Now she plans her own parties and I remind her to keep it small. Things are a lot better.

The day I came home from the hospital we called the Okinawa Ctr for DS2′s party and luckily our first choice was available.

Wow-That’s pretty crazy! I heard that a baby’s first birthday is a big deal, but I really didn’t know HOW big! Good luck with the planning though

I have two teens and am Canadian. We consider first birthdays to be a big deal too, but at 3 weeks is a little much dontcha think?!
Even at a year, it really is more for us parents than the kids… I mean how many actually remember it anyways.
Point is, don’t kill yourself over something that really doesn’t matter to baby Kaila. She’ll love ya anyways, and won’t know what happened.
Good luck!

One of the best things about being on the mainland is not having to throw a baby luau… although I certainly like going to other families’ parties!

Oh my God! That’s unbelievable! Last year for David’s first birthday we had a small party at home. There were only our relatives and some of our closest friends. I really enjoyed it because we were not too many people but the most important!:)

Big party, lots of kids, food, cake, bouncing house, at a center (my home is little) and we had many guests.
I think when you want something great and are organized you plan ahead.
