The Pumpkin Patch at Aloun Farms

Every year our family searches for the perfect pumpkin to carve for Halloween. We used to just head on over to the grocery store but there’s just something about picking your own pumpkin fresh off the vine that makes the experience so much more fun.

If you live in Hawaii, your only option for pumpkin picking is Aloun Farms in Kapolei. Here you can search the 7 acre farm for just the right one – big, small, orange, white, smooth, or bumpy. There’s also a petting zoo, hay rides, pony rides, games, food, and a farmers market.

We usually take the girls a couple weekends before Halloween but since I was in the hospital delivering their baby sister, my sister offered to take them instead. Of course, Kacie’s priority was finding the smoothest, roundest, and most perfect pumpkin. Kiana wanted one with a little more personality and chose one with a few bumps and craters on it. They both tried to find the tiniest pumpkin for their brand new sister.

So this week’s mission will be to carve these pumpkins out. It’s not exactly my favorite thing to do but the girls love showing off their creations for our annual Halloween dinner party. And since they spent so much time trying to find just the right pumpkin, I guess it’s the least I could do.

So what about your family? Where do you get your pumpkins from?

I never did pumpkin carving, it was and is still not use here in Belgium. We now put pumpkins out to decorate the entrance and eat it as vegetable but that’s about it. Pumpkin festivals are organized too. Halloween moves slowly in since 2000.

when I was little I grew my own. “Daddy” took us out to the field early in the summer and we scratched our initials into a pumpkin of our choice. Then when fall came around there was no question about which was ours!

  3. Last year we got a pumpkin from our then local to us pumpkin patch but I got impatient this year and picked up two small pumpkins for $1 each at the grocery store – both were seriously cute. We still went to the pumpkin patch just for fun this year but didn’t pick up a pumpkin there.

We sometimes go to a pumpkin patch… but other times we just run to the grocery store. With two sick kids this year we haven’t even gotten our pumpkins yet. And they’ll probably come from Wal-Mart… sigh :(

We normally head up to Anderson Farms (about an 2 hours north of us) because they actually grow the pumpkins there (there’s a closer farm that brings in pumpkins and just sets them in the field. :p ) Anderson has animals to pet and a corn maze…along with a “haunted ghost town” loads of fun. However this year we got snowed out and I can’t find the time to go. :(

so we got our pumpkins at Walmart.

We head to the pick your own farm for fruits & veg too. We found three. Two for cooking & one for carving. Princess Diva has even written her name on it so that no one could ever mistake it for hers!

We also did the corn maze (even got lost to the point that they gave us a prize for finding the farthest point of the maze) & the bake shop. It was wonderful!

Aw, that’s so sweet! We usually get our pumpkins wherever seems good at the time-Our favorite is driving into the country and stopping at random roadside farmers markets. That way we’re helping them out and getting ourselves an organic pumpkin :D

That’s so nice that your sister took your kids! We go to a local pumpkin patch here on the outskirts of Phoenix, called Schnepf Farms. It has a lot to offer but is a bit pricey.

  12. I’ve never been much into carving….I like to keep the pumpkins just the way the are, but I’m sure it has something to do with a little girl I knew in 2nd grade who accidentally cut off her pinky finger while carving a pumpking. UGH! We just grabbed some at the grocery store this year, but I have a ton of fake pumpkins in the house too! :-)
