The Waikiki Shell, which opened in September 1956, is home to many outdoor concerts throughout the year. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic dinner under the stars.

  • BTW, the final winner in the daily book giveaway is Carmen from Gone to Plaid. Congratulations!

I’ve never seen anything quite like that before. I wonder did they intend to design something that was based on a shell, or did the name come later when they saw what it looked like. I would think the acoustics must be great.

What a beautiful setting in which to view a concert!

That looks like a great band shell. I’ve seen similar band shells in other locations (including back home in Canada) but none in such a beautiful setting! It looks like a great place to attend a concert.

I love that they call it the Shell! I’m a theme-y person so I appreciate that sort of wittiness for an ampitheater that is on the island.

Someday I’m going to get there. I swear! Great picture!

It totally looks like the one in Boston: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatch_Shell

But I bet it’s nice to be able to go there year round, instead of only about 6 months of the year ;-)

    Congrats to Carmen!

Very cool shot! It reminded me of the one in Boston, too. I try to watch the Boston Pops Orchestra every fourth of July. I guess this shape really works to project the sounds!

    That is pretty amazing
What do you take in your picnic basket???

The closest cool place for a concert here is at
The gorge. I’ve only been to one concert there. But it was something else.

That’s pretty cool looking. Yet another reason to come visit hawaii. There’s so much stuff that I’d have to end up living there to experience everything I want. :P

That is a beautiful structure and it stands out well against the blue sky. It also is wonderful for the acoustics of the event.

Great choice, the Waikiki Shell. I can’t wait to get home and see all the places I’ve missed for the past 8 months.

I’ll be living in Ma’ili. I’m going to miss seeing my daughter who’s getting deployed. She leaves April 18 for training with the group she’s going with. Hope they let her come home before she goes to Iraq. I’ll let you know when I get back to Hawai’i.
