A Very Sad Day
I wasn’t planning on blogging today since I’m currently in San Diego on a layover. However, something terrible happened in Hawaii yesterday and I just can’t seem to shake this depressing feeling. I didn’t know the people involved, I wasn’t a witness to the tragedy. Yet, I can’t get it off my mind.
Here’s what happened:
At about 12 noon, HST, Cyrus Belt, 2, died of “multiple blunt force injuries due to a fall from a height”. He was thrown from a freeway overpass onto the highway by his babysitter. Two cars then ran over him. The babysitter looked over the walkway, watched the child die, then leisurely strolled away while smoking a cigarette.
Earlier in the day, Cyrus’s Mother asked the Grandfather to watch her son. When she returned home, the Grandfather took a nap not knowing that she had left the apartment again. When he awoke, the child was gone. Apparently, Cyrus wandered off and ended up at his babysitter’s apartment directly upstairs. What happened after that is not yet known.
Witnesses say they saw the babysitter throw something off the overpass into oncoming traffic but thought it was a doll. When they realized it was a child, they went after him and restrained him until the police arrived. The babysitter is being held for psychiatric evaluation.
Authorities now say that when Cyrus was a year old, he was taken by Child Protective Services because they felt the Mother was not adequately caring for her son. He was later returned to her.
I know that terrible things happen every day, yet this has really hit me hard and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because he’s the same age as Baby Bug. Maybe it was the way he died. Maybe it’s because they showed the police breaking the news to the Mother on television. What I do know is that Cyrus is now in a better place and I have to keep reminding myself of this. Still, no one should have to go through something like this – especially an innocent child.

it breaks my heart
especially since I have a most adorable two year old . ..
Such a tragedy. To think that it is even possible for someone to think about doing much less do it is very scarey to me.

This just breaks my heart to read tragic stories like this. I can’t even imagine the thoughts this woman or any other person have to make them do something sick and cruel like this.

That is such a terrible tragedy. I couldn’t believe someone can do such a thing. My heart aches for that innocent child.

Oh, my goodness, what a horrible tragedy!!! And then they showed the mother being told the news?? What is this world coming to? Why do we have to watch everyone’s personal tragedies unfold???? Also I cannot imagine the mind set of someone who can just throw away a precious child’s life.

I got chills just picturing that horror scene unfolds. This reminds me of another case in Alabama recently where a Vietnamese father threw his 4 children (3 of his and 1 stepchild) over a bridge b/c he had a prior argument with his wife. This hit me hard when I heard it, since we’re both Vietnamese and boat people and I have 4 kids too but man, I’d love for him to be deported back to VN and somebody does some hurting on him!

How terribly heartbreaking and tragic. That child is at peace and will never hurt again, now, but I can’t imagine how this has affected everyone involved from the witnesses to family to emergency services.
