Congratulations!

Can a baby’s toy make much of a difference in a world of global warming and economic recession? Of course, say the founders of Fair Indigo, a company where gifts have a purpose. Meet Mel the Monkey and Icy the Penguin, two of the Joobles, a new line of incredibly soft knit stuffed characters made for cuddling.

Joobles are precious playmates from Peru where artisans have hand crafted a menagerie of animals under fair trade conditions, providing work and hope to hundreds of rural and urban Peruvians. That’s why their tagline is Responsible, Sustainable, Adorable™.

Each incredibly soft animal is made with eco-friendly dyes and organic cotton grown in Peru. Calley the Cat stands 11” tall (as all the friends do) with adorable whiskers and a huggable green and yellow body. For parents hunting for eco-friendly toys, all of the Joobles are made with cotton grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. Eliminating these chemicals is not only better for baby, but also for workers and for the environment.

“Equally important, we pay fair wages to the good people who make our clothes and accessories instead of the minimum wages that are often the norm today,” explains Robert Behnke, Co-founder and Vice President, Merchandising for Fair Indigo.

There are 9 Joobles filled with personality and promise: Bella the Bunny, Buzzy Bug, Calley the Cat, Fair Bear,  Icy the Penguin, Jiffy the Giraffe, Mel the Monkey, Mooey Cow and Pip the Dog.

We received Buzzy Bug to review and I have to say how impressed I was with the colors and quality. You can tell a lot of pride went into making sure that every child would carry around their stuffed pet with pride. The soft materials used to make Buzzy and all his friends is what makes them so cuddly and squeezable. Perfect for keeping kids cozy in bed.

As soon as Buzzy arrived at our home, Baby Bug immediate adopted him as hers. He’s the perfect size for her to carry around and they’ve been inseperable ever since.

Retailing for just $29 each, Joobles can be found online at www.fairindigo.com or at specialty e-tailers like Oompa.com. Visit Fair Indigo’s website to see detailed images of each animal.  The colorful characters range from turquoise to celery green.

Where do Joobles come from? Started by a Peruvian family — a mom, a dad, and their daughter — this company provides work and hope to hundreds of rural and urban Peruvians all over the country. Small groups of impoverished workers are trained to run their own small businesses making hand-knit clothing and accessories.  In addition to providing much needed employment, they train workers throughout Peru in such valuable skills as quality control and production planning. Fair Indigo also works with this company’s charitable arm by donating free breakfasts and school supplies to children of the workers.

Parents who have shopped for organic toys will appreciate the value of Joobles. Other pricier knit toys not only cost more, but are often made of acrylic yarn and not made under fair trade conditions. Joobles are not only 100% adorable but will improve our planet for the next generation by supporting small sustainable farming and fair trade. Isn’t it amazing how the right toy can make a difference?

Win it!

  35. ReggieMann says:

Fair Indigo uses a concept called “Fair Trade”.
    which is quite simply:
Fair Trade means that producers are paid fair prices for the products they produce, instead of the minimum prices that the marketplace will allow, as is the case in the mainstream market today.

  36. I like Icy The Penguin
    I’m already a subscriber.

  37. Kathleen W. says:

I’m surprised at how small the Fair Trade market is in the US, and that American Apparel is the only major brand selling “sweatshop–free” clothing here.

    Kudos to Fair Indigo!

  38. Kathleen W. says:

    And I have your button.

  39. judy brittle says:

I like Jiffy the Giraffe the best.

  63. sito says:

Fair Indigo goes beyond minimum wage requirements and looks at what would constitute a “living wage.” I think that’s an important distinction. I am impressed that Fair Indigo lists out the questions they asked and the process they went through to determine what they would consider “fair trade,” and I think they have a good handle on it. They have lovely things, and I can feel good about anything I purchase there.

  64. sito says:

  77. Jen says:

the term means that the people who work so hard to make our stuff get paid a fair price for their hard work and time! some countries dont pay the wages that are deserved of the workers and that is not fair!

we should care because we should treat others the wat we want to be treated ourselves, the golden rule, hello? would you want to get paid pennies for something you spent all day on? I dont think so!

  78. Jen says:

    I subscribe!

  92. I have your button on my sidebar.

  93. Dree says:

I can’t believe this is true. American Apparel is the only one selling teen clothes that is sweat-shop free other than Free Trade. That is amazing and sad.

  94. Tamara B. says:

They pay fair wages to the good people who make our clothes and accessories instead of the minimum wages that dominate the clothing market today. Such an excellent concept and I believe people should be protected against companies who will try to make honest people work in a sweata shop enviroment!

The “fair trade” concept is one I haven’t heard of before this blog entry. I am in favor of companies doing everything they can to offer workers a fair wage for their work. It is a good thing when people can actually earn a LIVING doing a job instead of less than a living. I am impressed with Fair Indigo.

If I won, any of these little critters would be great…I think Pip, Icy and Buzzy are my favorites though!
