Mommy Blogs on The Today Show

In case you missed it, Dooce was interviewed on The Today Show by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb regarding the Mommy Blogging Phenomenon. Towards the end, Kathie Lee questioned how smart is it for Heather to blog about her daughter, Leta, for safety reasons. This has sparked an outrage within the blogsophere since Kathie Lee is famous for constantly talking about her son, Cody, on national television.

Is she a hypocrite? What do you think?

I’m glad you had that interview for me to see, I read another blog that I can’t find now. So it was nice to see the interview.

    oh hellz yeah!
Kathie Lee shared so much about Cody and Cassidy over the years as well as things about her marriage, her sex life, her husband’s thinning hair, her hormones and on and on and on. really what makes her any better than any mommy blogger out there? i was so annoyed with her stance on that and the way she talked over heather.
yes i blogged about it too. ;)

  3. Holly Schwendiman says:

I just had to laugh at the scenes of conventions in hotel rooms with people shoulder to shoulder hovered over their laptops. It so perfectly displays the technological world we live in – many of them may have been having a conversation with the person next to them but through instant messages and comments! LOL I think it’s interesting to see the way the world is viewing moms in light of the blogging revolution.

    Hugs,
    Holly

yeah you know she is, but I never thought of dooce as the “goddess of all mommy bloggers”…

I saw this and I dont think Heather is irresponsible at all. It is nothing different then what she does and what any “famous” person does with their children.

  6. Kila says:

Thanks for sharing the interview–I enjoyed seeing Dooce like that–but Kathie Lee, yikes, I have no idea why she is still on TV. She’s awful! And, yes, hypocritical.

  7. Arizona says:

Kathy Lee is yucky any way you look at her. It amazes me that people make so much money blogging because I don’t make any. It actually costs me money since it takes up so much of my time!!! lol! I don’t like blogging about products though…is that how you make money? I have no idea. But now I’m wondering….hmmmmmm….

  8. ciara says:

ariz-that’s how i made money of my blog, but i don’t do it anymore. too time consuming for me..and i don’t want to talk about something i wouldn’t use myself. there are other ways, too, but i don’t know all the ways.

anyways, i’ve always disliked kathie lee. she’s annoying, conceited, thinks her kids are better than everyone else’s, and very hypocritical. what’s sad is people like her singing and i think she’s a horrible singer. i was so glad when she left and kelly replaced her. she was what i call ‘tired’. however, when i blog about my kids you will not see a photo or their real names. the only one i do mention by name and show photos of is almost 21, the other two are too young.

  9. Renee says:

ya know, moms talk about their kids to total strangers all the time in public…I don’t see any difference with putting it on the web.
Kathy-Lee kept saying she doesn’t know anything about the internet and obiviously she doesn’t by the way she was talking. I do find Kathy-Lee very hypocritical.

  10. diana/sunshine says:

i think kathy lee’s questions are in line with those who aren’t familiar with the blogging world and/or the internet. and in some ways, they’re valid questions.

yes, she constantly talked about personal stuff and her kids while on the air but i don’t think many sick people or pediphiles would try to make contact with her or her kids because of that.

the internet and blogging makes it a little easier for these kind of people to manipulate pictures and cyber stalk someone who becomes appealing to them.

it’s then possible for cyber stalking to turn into real life stalking. and they’re able to do this from all the information they’ve gathered on one’s blog.

i think bloggers do need to be careful and not give out too much information.

I wish they would have at leat read their background info cards – they had no clue as to her audience, amount of hate mail, etc.

They really blew their own credibility – I mean they could have at least tried to look intelligent about it (or even at least read her blog before interviewing her)

  17. Alexia says:

I think it’s a little hypocritical. And really, it would probably be easier to find Kathie’s address than most Mommy bloggers. It’s not like we are putting address/phone numbers/last names out there for all the world to see. Most times people don’t even know what city we hail from.

  18. Cathi says:

I’m glad you posted the interview Kailani. I have never been a fan of Kathie Lee Gifford. I feel she was quite rude at the end of the interview and she’s right, she shouldn’t have an opinion about something she is completely ignorant about. I’m off to check out Heather’s blog now!!

  19. TheAngelForever says:

How sad is it that I have stopped watching Today at the end because I can not deal with Kathy Lee? The show was really good and they made a HUGE mistake bringing her in. She is cognitively impulsive and just spouts from her mouth without thinking. It should be interesting to see if NBC says anything about the controversy that has resulted in her stupid comments.

Too bad Heather was too stunned with her comments not to jab back about airing her own dirty laundry on National Television. We all know WAY too much about Cody and Cassidy through the years from her own mouth and not the tabloids.

I felt REALLY bad for Heather. I can’t believe she didn’t cold cock her.

The term mommy blogs is silly… I don’t come here cause you are a mommy blog although you have a blog and you are a mom…
Does that make me any less of a blogger that I don’t have children?

I not only want to thank you for posting this as I have stopped watch the Today Show once Kathy Lee comes on…but I want to thank everyone else that has commented here. 25. Pamela Kramer says:

Thanks for posting the video! I’m so out of the loop and I rarely get to watch any morning shows. I think that we all protect our children in the best way we can. We all blog about our children and post photos, that’s what Mom Bloggers do! We share our lives. That isn’t really any different from Kathy G. She is a celebrity and your other readers are right. She has shared a lot about her marriage and children.

  26. pickel says:

What amazes me is their lack of research. They did not get Jill Asher’s name right (Silicon Valley Mom’s co-founder) and they didn’t do their research on Dooce. Otherwise, they would have known why she blogs for a living and what her reactions really are to people who don’t like her (take a hike).

Kathy is no different than Dooce when it comes to sharing her personal life on TV, no different than Regis and Kelly or any national talk show host. However, like others have said, the internet makes people anonymous when it comes to stalking and thats when it can be scary. Sure, someone can watch you on tv for hours a day but the internet makes your thoughts and pictures available every second.

  29. annaliza says:

i think kathy lee is just uninformed, that’s all. i don’t think she meant that comment to be offensive or any of the sort. i’m glad that “dooce” is sharing that this is how us families connect and share with each other. God knows we all need it!

  30. janny226 says:

Yeah, I think hypocrite is one word for Kathie Lee. I think “just not too bright” would be another; I’ve never really watched her but she certainly did not have her brain in gear.

Clearly (by the end) she felt threated by Dooce; maybe part of Kathie Lee’s subconscious mind was thinking about how much she has shared about her kids and maybe thinking she should get credit for being the mother of all ” talking about motherhood” oevres.

And how can one of the hosts of the Today show not know anything about computers? Is it their idea of having the doddering blatherer on the show, like Andy Rooney on 60 minutes? I thought Heather did a very professional job of handling her side of the interview.

  31. Kristen says:

Kathy Lee is a ditz. I really don’t care for her. I can’t believe she is on the Today Show at all. The best thing that ever happened to live tv is getting rid of her and putting on Kelly Ripa.
Why they would have her interview Heather Armstrong when she obviously knows nothing about blogging is beyond me.

  32. Laura Spencer says:

I don’t see any difference between talking about your kids on national television and blogging about them. If anything, talking about them on television is probably more dangerous.

Personally, I only talk about my kids in a general way on my blog, and not in specific ways. This is because I respect their right to privacy. I would do the same if I were on TV – be general and not specific.

  35. Karen Lynch-Live the Power says:

I don’t really have an opinion on Kathie Lee but I do agree with her about the safety issues and for me it doesn’t quite feel right to blog about my children.
When they are mentioned, they are referred to as Beautiful daughters #1, #2 and #3 and there is never a photograph.
Perhaps I’m overprotective but just as I won’t let them go to the park by themselves, I also will not invite the world into their lives by writing about them and posting photos. Saying that “it is no different from the other famous people with children” seems rather shallow and egotistical to me. My children are more precious to me than my blog. Much, much more. (and I love my blog!)

  36. Kelly@SHE-POWER says:

Being an Aussie, Idon’t know this Kathy Lee woman so I cannot comment on whether she’s a hypocrite, but she definitely sounds like an idiot! And very judgemental. I don’t see why blogging about your kids or not is any different to any other decision we make as parents. One size does not fit all.

I have posted the odd picture of my 4 year old, but don’t use his name. That feels right to me. Does everyone I know agree? No. But I don’t necessarily agree with ways they raise their kids either. It’s a personal thing.

Now if Dooce is sharing her more grown daughter’s personal details with us in 5 years time and we’re reading about her first period etc, then I would say she’s overstepped the line. Maturity brings with it a right to privacy and the relationship with our children changes to become one of a bit more give and take. But right now, I don’t see how she is endangering her child by blogging about her.

    Good post kailani.
