Aloha Friday – Week 22

February 29, 2008 by

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing heavy or too thought-provoking.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Today’s question is:

What is your greatest pet peeve related to blogging?

For me, it’s people who attack other people’s comments. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions and should feel comfortable to say what’s on their mind as long as it’s done respectfully. If you can’t say it nicely, then don’t say it at all. IMHO. :-)

I’m somewhat new at blogging so I really don’t have a pet peeve …yet.

Hmm. pet peeve about blogging. You know I can’t really say. I think my biggest pet peeve may be auto playing music on people’s blogs. I cannot stand that. That is a reason to close the browser and just go away.

Yeah, that’s it. as for the attacking comments, do you mean when someone comments something bad about the site/blog/person?

    Renee says:

I have to agree with yoshi on the auto playing music…first it boggs down my computer and sometimes I have to reach quickly for my spearker volume so I don’t wake the entire house.
Knock wood, I haven’t had a problem with mean commenters…a few weird ones, but no one has been mean. YAY

Definitely trying to get my blog “out there” so more people will find it.

I’m a friendly lass and make friends easily in the ‘real world’, but the effort and time you can put into social bokmarking sites can suck up a day. And I find SEO hideously boring. And that leads into my other pet peeve, managing my technical deficiencies. My blog still doesn’t look how I would like, and I have a feeling I should have picked a 3 column wordpress theme.

But the weekend is almost here, so time to stop thinking about blogs. I think my husband is getting bored with me…

I’m sorry, but my biggest peeve is when people don’t use good grammar or spelling. I can understand the occasional mistake. But come on! I want to be able to understand what you write!

    Carrie says:

I agree, people ARE entitled to their own opinion, positive or negative, but seriously, what’s the point of saying something rude in comments, just to be rude and get attention?! I’ve been repeating the “if you can’t say anything nice…” quote over and over to my kids lately. Maybe one day it will sink in!?
The automatic music player bugs me too, it should be optional.
    Also spelling mistakes….;)

For me, it’s requiring readers to register before they can comment. When I see the phrase “register to comment, it’s fast and free!”, I am so out of that blog in a second.

    Grace’s last blog post..spreading like a virus

can i just give you a long list =) jk

i guess my biggest pet peeve is when it’s obvious that a person doesn’t go back and proof-read what they wrote because it’s riddled with typos, bad grammar, or just doesn’t make sense. have some consideration for the reader, please.

there are some writing styles that I don’t like. using very difficult words, or too many emoticons or too many “hehe”. i don’t get it sometimes.

also, i very rarely read very long post, those with more than 1000 characters. if i am new to the site, i don’t read them.

so far i don’t have experience with bad commenters. i would hate having one.

    TopChamp says:

Music tops it for me too. On blogs I visit regularly I try to dive straight to the music player to hit STOP before whatever it is sticks in my head and drives me nuts all day.

I wish people would set their music players to default as OFF then I could choose to listen if I wanted to.

Last year I used to have music playing on the background. Upon reading the other comments, I’m glad I already removed the mp3 player on my sidebar. :)

I agree that people are entitled to their own opinions. I think it would be better to keep quiet rather than leave offending comments.

I don’t like the music playing in the background either especially when it’s completely unexpected and suddenly I can hear some weird song and have no idea where it is coming from – or worse still – someone talking!

    Jacki says:

I have two: the auto-music (because most times I am listening to some music on my computer, so it cuts into what is already playing).

And bloggers who do not visit your blog even once after you have left a comment. If someone new leaves a comment on my blog, I will go back to theirs and at least say “Thanks for visiting!”

    Tiffany says:

I think one of the things that bugs me on a blog is the automatic music, like others have said. I also have my own music playing in the background a lot of the time. But, I also enjoy seeing what other people have on their players. So, I would say, keep them there, but just don’t set them to automatically play!

Luckily, I have not had too many rude comments, but I did have one where someone used a semi-cuss (meaning, not hard-core) word. It was just frustrating because the rest of the comment was really good, but I did not want content like that on my blog.

Biggest pet peeve about blogging is not having more time to do it :-) It’s one of the more relaxing parts of my day.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but honestly, misspelled words or misuse of words absolutely drives me bonkers. Once in a while, fine, we’ll all human, but if it’s consistent, I lose patience and move on.

And I’m right there with Bahama Mama, too. I HATE the “not having time to do something excuse” because honestly, it’s just another way of saying, “I don’t want to make time for such-and-such.” And that’s fine, just please, don’t complain about it.

Oh, one more thing, light text on dark backgrounds. I seriously get a headache after visiting blogs like that – I actually see spots! It’s not just visually comfortable.

  20. 20
    Dee says:

Wow I think I must have offended many on the spelling errors pet peeve….I don’t know why, but my spell check doesn’t work on blogger and hasn’t for atleast a month.

Anyway, a pet peeve of mine would be people that don’t comment or leave a message on my blog after I have visited theirs many times and have felt like I’ve gotten to know them thru their blogs. Is that being silly?

Dee’s last blog post..I Did it!

  21. 21

Pet peeve: People who use blogs as one giant bucket to throw up in. I don’t want to read post after post about how terrible your life is, your recent toothache, your car breaking down, your child being belligerent, your horrible husband. It’s completely okay and necessary to complain sometimes, but not continually with no breaks for sunshine.

    Kristen says:

    My pet peeve:

When I find an old friends blog (from HS, hometown, whatever) and comment to say hello and get nothing in response. Then I am set to wonder if they even got the comment, did but doesn’t care, or thought it was great that I found them, visited my site, but didn’t even say hello. A “HI” back would be nice, it’s so simple. I know they come back to my blog often (tracker). I don’t ever expect a hello back, however, from people I don’t know or those who have a huge following (which you were so sweet to do).

I am a newbie in the blog world. So I haven’t found a major pet peeve yet. But one that comes to my mind is the blog that has too many things to load that it freezes my browser. I just don’t know what they have in there that took it forever to load because I never gets pass it.

I agree with some of the others – music is definitely a big one for me. Especially when I’m blog reading during nap/quiet time – having music suddenly start playing from my laptop is a huge problem.

I think for me too – reading long posts where everything is just one huge paragraph that just goes on and on – I tend to skip over a lot of those. It’s so much easier to read a long post if everything’s nicely broken down into smaller chunks.

    Great question!

    Qtpies7~ says:

For me it is certain commentors. Commentors who leave comments about your post knowing nothing about you. Like one person reamed me, even chastising me with Bible verses, saying I am jealous of my daughter and all sorts of things about me saying bad things about her. If she knew my blog, or read the whole POST, she’d have seen how it was something that we joke about in our family.
I also can’t stand anonymous posters who have scathing comments. (oh, how dare you use your warranty on your couch that you bought in case something happens, when that happening was your own fault! What is insurance for???)

Yep, that is my pet peeve! OH, and I don’t like how 58 people will come to my blog and not one comment will be left, lol.

    Qtpies7~’s last blog post..Can I give you a boost?

    Lulu says:

I’ve probably been guilty of this too, but my biggest pet peeve is LOOOOOOONG posts. I’ve obviously got ADD, because I can only read a post for so long before my mind starts to wander, and then it’s time for me to go. I usually read posts at work (gasp!), so they kind of have to be short, sweet, and to the point for me to have time for them. And this is why I love you.

    Melissa says:

Pet peeve… hmmm… I guess when I visit a new blog and leave a comment or two, but then they never come to my blog to say anything… whenever I get new people, I try really hard to hit their blog at least once to say “Hey! Glad you stopped by” and then comment on their current post… it’s petty, I know…

  33. 33

I would agree with a poster above, person’s who don’t comment back after you have visited their blog. I leave nice comments when I’m brave :)

I guess I meant when someone attacks a comment on my blog that was left by another visitor. If they want to say something not so nice about my post, I can take it. I may not like it, but I can take it. However, it’s not cool to attack someone else who innocently stopped by.

I totally agree with everyone who said, “People who don’t visit my blog after I leave a comment (or several) on theirs”. After about 3 times with no response, I either stop visiting them, or (yikes) become a lurker.

Hmmm…looks like I’ll think twice when I put music on my site after reading a few of the comments! ;)
Actually, I rarely have music …just once in awhile for a special occasion. I don’t mind others’ music once in awhile…especially if it’s soothing, and not jarring!

Anyway, I guess mine would be lurkers since I rarely lurk myself.
And of course those icky, grafitti types of replies from strange people…thankfully, they are few and far between!

OK…one more. How addictive it can be!

    Hello every one.
I think it is a frustration to me when I read a terrific post and would love to make a comment (and I typ one out) then I have a window pop up and I have to register with some rss? or the like. I am a novice and I feel uncomfortable in giving myself out to register when I am not sure what the ramifications are.
The music by choice would be a nicer option because I too blog when the kids are resting at night. If I can turn it low It helps to allow me to enjoy it.
I hope you are all having a fun friday.

I agree with the “when I comment on someone’s blog and they don’t visit mine” pet peeves. Also, blogger sometimes is so quirky (or maybe it’s me!). I space things how I like them to look, but when I hit publish is one big run-on paragraph. That’s hard on the eyes.

    Lisa says:

I hate blogs that have super-dark backgrounds and neon text. They hurt my eyes and when I leave there I see spots! I prefer blogs with easy-on-the-eyes layouts and colors.

Lisa’s last blog post..Cinnamon Roll Sunday

  46. 46

I hate it when people leave comments that have absolutely nothing to do with the post at hand.

Sure, I understand there are times when you need to get in touch with somebody and the only way is to leave a comment. That’s probably the exception to the rule.

If peeps are going to leave a comment at least make it relevant to what’s being discussed unless you really feel the need to clarify whatever point you are trying to make.

I too don’t like automatic music players OR pop ups! I tend to leave real quick when I run into those issues.

If your blog is WAY too cluttered I tend to move along, move along, like I say I will. ;)

As for posting a comment from my blog.. sometimes it’s necessary to respond from my own blog because my comments are SO long sometimes that it warrants it.

I think it’s ok to speak up and disagree and don’t mind when peeps do it from their own blog. I just hope that they let me know that they did so I will be able to participate in the discussion.

What’s my greatest pet peeve? The same – people who attack other people comments or posts! Each one of us has our own way of thinking – therefore our own opinion. Also, those blogs that are dark in color and dont use sontrasting colors for their fonts!

    Therefore, whether telemarketing services are
managed within the company or outsourced
to a call center, it is of primary importance to maintain a high level of professionalism in conducting the
services. It is also critical to note that unlisted numbers and
information located in sealed court documents and other legal, sealed records,
tax cases, bankruptcy, etc are never included in phone appending services from companies.
In the telemarketing industry, cold-calling success
is defined by being able to mix together a bunch of
different things like lead quality, phone marketing skills, performance,
    leadership, communication and many more.
