Aloha Friday #40

I installed Scrabulous on my Facebook page. Anyone wanna play?

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Today’s question is:

How do you decide who goes on your blogroll?
Do you participate in reciprocal links with bloggers you don’t know?

Any advice for a newbie on using technorati or stumbleupon? How do you get the buttons at the end of each of your posts (facebook, digg, stumble, techorati, etc.)?

I’ll have a new “how to” for your soon. Thanks!

my blogroll are blogs that i read and leave comments on a regular basis.

i have come across a couple of bloggers who have put me on their blogroll but i haven’t felt comfortable reciprocating by putting them on my blogroll because i don’t read them on a regular basis. i feel a little guilty but it’s the truth.

i read a lot of blogs and don’t want my blogroll to be super long, so i just keep it to my regulars.

My links page is basically a reflection of my feed reader. If I read you then I put your link on there. come to think of it though, my links really need to be updated. In this day and age, I feel that blogrolls don’t have as much meaning as they used to. But that’s just me.

If someone links me and tells me, then I’ll probably link them, and I might even start reading them if I don’t know them. :D

I just don’t believe in “blogrolls” anymore personally. I’ll probably have to blog about that and see what kind of waves I can make.

Majority of people in my blog roll are blog friends and regular visitors to my blog. Recently, I’ve exchanged a few links with new and interesting bloggers.

i only have a few people on my blogroll. mainly blogs that i have been reading for a long time. it’s also not long because i like to ask someone if i may add them to it, and i haven’t asked many people.

plenty of people have added me to their blogroll without my knowing, but i haven’t done the same in return….

I have a rotating image blogroll, so anyone who has me on theirs (If I know about it) is on it. Sometimes it takes me a while to find out if I’m on a blogroll, though. Totally reciprocal. I figure the big blogs don’t need my link.

Oooo, good question! I visit the blog, if I like it, I revisit frequently and post comments. If the email me back that is also a plus then put them on my blog roll.

I have actually been thinking about my blog roll lately. It is definitely something I want to change. I think I may move it to a page of it’s own. Right now it is filled with bloggy friends that I have, but I have to admit I have not updated it in quite some time. I have WAY too many items in my Google Reader to put on the side, but would love to share them with others.

My blogroll only contains blogs I read regularly and have done for some time. I have lots of blogs in my reader who I keep track of, but my blogroll has the sites I have real affection for, like AN ISLAND LIFE!

    Dad of Divas says:

I have a few ways I choose the blogs on the blogroll and am not afraid to recriprocate as I have asked in the past for people to place mine on their blog. I do place ones that I enjoy there but also have places for specific dad bloggers as well that I may or may not read all the time.

  18. 18

I put the blogs that I’ve been reading for a long time on there, or if I find one that’s new and interesting and that I know I’ll be reading regularly. I only put links on there if I know the blog and read and enjoy it. I think that most of the ones that I read also read mine, so it ends up reciprocal anyway. :)

    Renee says:

first I visit and thank new commenters on my blog. I also click and visit blogers who comment on my already blogrolled blogs. If I like what I see, I visit a few times and if I’m still happy I add them to my blogroll.

However, I tend to delete folks off my blogroll who don’t comment back. I’ve got too much going on in my life to go read blogs for folks who don’t comment back.

I only use the blogroll to have urls handy for posting. I use my reader to actually visit.

    Jen E says:

I’m kind of a blogroll junkie – if I like even one post I’m likely to add you – if you comment on my blog, I may add you – but sometimes my blogroll feels a bit ridiculous so this is not an exact science – somedays I’m just not in a blogroll adding mood.

How do you decide who goes on your blogroll?
-I don’t have one. Rather, I highlight blog posts of special interest and mention bloggers that I meet at events (with links to their blog) in my regular posts.

Do you participate in reciprocal links with bloggers you don’t know?
-Very rarely, unless I really like their writing/site.

You’ve reminded me that one thing I need to do is to update my blogroll. I generally put someone on there after they’ve visited my blog quite a bit and mine theirs. I usually don’t just arbitrarily add someone. However..that being said, I really need to clean mine off cause it hasn’t been updated in over a years!

    Yikes.

I have Facebook Kailani, but I never use it. I just don’t have the time!!! It does have a lot of cool applications though. I’ve never played Scrabulous, but maybe I should try it….

I only put sites I visit on mine, and friends and family, regardless how much I visit them. However, I have places I visit that I don’t have on my blogroll, either because I am on the email list or I am too lazy to get them on there.
I had a blog design made but didn’t find out until later that it was for old blogger and changing things takes html that I am not very fluent in.

Um… actually, I deleted my blogroll :S I felt like I was updating it too often and I knew that there were blogs I didn’t have on there, but needed to put on… I don’t like feeling guilty about blogging. It should be fun. Lots of fun! So, I removed the source of the guilt.

    Amy says:

Yesterday I actually deleted a bunch of blogs from my list because it was getting too overwhelming! When I started blogging my goal was to make some close friendships and get to know people intimately.

There are so many wonderful ladies out there. So many people that face difficult challenges and their stories make me cry, but inspire me too. I could spend every single second reading about them, couldn’t you?

So anyway, I am left with friends that I want to visit as often as I possibly can and get to know them as well as I can!

I post people whose blogs I read, and even if it isn’t a blog I read often, if someone has taken time to help me out, shown me kindness, I list them there. I am still really new at this blogging thing, and ask for help a LOT! If someday I can help someone who has helped me by linking back to them, then I do it!

Ahem – I think I need to relook at my blogroll. I try to keep it short and list bloggers whose content would be interesting to someone who is interested in my blog.

    And no, I wouldn’t do a reciprocal link with a blogger I don’t know. I’m like that . . .

    Liza R says:

Different parts of my blogroll serve different purposes. While many of the blogs are listed because they are daily reads (and I can’t be bothered with feed readers – I’ve tried several times with several readers), others are there because I believe that they’ll be of interest to my readers (such as some of the other Israeli blogs, some of the regional blogs, etc), either because they offer views that might be different from mine or because they provide a gateway into other blogs from the region.

Whenever I come across a new blog, if it’s one that really strikes me (like this one!), I’ll add it straight away. If I’m not sure, I simply bookmark it, and if I find myself going back to it, I’ll add it to the blogroll.

I’ve also got a category for websites of note, sites that aren’t necessarily blogs, but rather portals for different blog groupings, blog directories, etc.

While I don’t include every new blog I find, I do try to be diverse, and try to offer a selection of blogs covering a wide variety of topics of special interest to me, as well as blogs from all over the world.

Oh, and Kailani – I’m addicted to Scrabulous. Even my four year-old knows what it is, and when he wants to make me smile, he gives me a little grin and says, “Mommy, you’re scrabulous!” His job is to click the “Play Word” button once I’ve placed my tiles on the board, and he is genuinely concerned when I tell him that my opponent is winning, because he wants me to win. :-)

I put blogs and sites that I like on my blogroll plus sites that you can get entries to giveaways by having their button on your sidebar. And if I like a blog, even if I don’t know the blogger, I’ll put them on my sidebar and get to know them better. =)
