Aloha Friday #49

September 25, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Today’s question is:

What is the oldest item of clothing that you own?

Aloha for stopping by Snowbird, Sher :), Kila, Kelly@SHE-POWER, Stacey, Mary @ Adventures in Mommyland, Jess NBP, Medstudentwife, Sheila, Thefarmerfiles, Matt, Tena, CoolProducts, Aloha Monkey, Maria, Amy-Happy Momma, Colleen, Diana, Sagemom, Pamela Kramer, Jo, Happyathome, Melissa, Tracey, Muthering Heights, Jennifer, Jamie, Kelly, Qtpies7, Mama Zen, Meredith, Jen E @ mommablogsalot, HeatherY, Bridgette, Lisa C., TheAngelForever, Em Dy, Megryansmom, Jenni, Anne, Rach (Heart of Rachel), Tara, Deb - Mom of 3 Girls, Renee, Jen, Diana/sunshine, Deborah, Cora, Mrs. Brownstone @ XBOX Wife, Tamy ~ 3 Sides of Crazy, Dad of Divas, AmyG, Ohana Mama, and Sheila

I know that I still have some shirts from high school!

Tamy ~ 3 Sides of Crazy said:

I have a cabbage patch doll from the 80’s that is wearing my first dress from the 60’s.

Mrs. Brownstone @ XBOX Wife said:

The oldest item of my own personal clothing that I own is the little red dress I wore home from the hospital when I was born! ~~~ The oldest item of clothing I own that belonged to someone else is an old velveteen striped coat that used to be my mom’s. I’m not sure how old it is exactly, but I’m pretty sure it’s older than me! ~~~ The oldest item of my own personal clothing that I own that actually still fits is my high school letter jacket!

Great question! Honestly, I have no idea. I’ll guess that it is my mother’s wedding dress. But, then that isn’t exactly an item of clothing I wear often. Now you’ll have me thinking about this all week!

diana/sunshine said:

ooohh, let me think for a moment. i have a couple of dresses that i know are really old - i just don’t know how old. i also have a pair of snow pants that are probably 10 years old. i noticed them the other day and thought to myself… i need to get rid of those.

Probably my gray sweatshorts from high school. They hold a special place in my heart because I wore them to an after prom sleepover which was one of the first times I realized that I was totally falling in love with my husband. :)

Renee said:

wholy cow! I just tried to figure out how old this dress that I still have is and it’s like 25 years old! I have a dress by Jessica McClintock but it was one of her first line called Gunne Sax. I did a search to see if I could find a picture of it online, but no luck…I guess I should take my own picture. I was still able to get into it by loosening up the fake front corset strings a few years ago…I haven’t tried recently though.

Um, that still fits?? Probably nothing that’s older than 7 years or so. ;)

I have some clothes that were mine when I was a kid that my mom saved for me. In fact, I passed a shirt that used to be mine down to my own girls - Hannah’s been wearing it this summer. :)

Tara said:

I have a blue dress that I wore when I was 7. My
mother gave it to me when we lived in the Philippines as Missionaries. I guess that means its 23 years old. Ugh Im 30 now grrr lol

My mom gave me my Christening gown. I have kept it all these years.

A fringed jacket I have had since high school

I have a purple Champion sweatshirt that was a favorite of mine in high school!

Megryansmom said:

I have a reddish/maroon sweater vest, from the 70’s, that belonged to my dad. I brought it home with me after he died and sometimes I just hold it close to my face and think of him.

Em Dy said:

I have a windbreaker jacket that I bought some 15 years ago.

Happy weekend!

TheAngelForever said:

I have some old sweatshirts that are still in good shape that I bought when I was in college 10+ years ago.

Lisa C. said:

my wedding dress… it’s 13 years old.. lol..

Bridgette said:

I have my Christening dress…it is the one my Mom wore, too, so I guess it is about 55 years old!

HeatherY said:

I guess it would have to be my Christening gown which is now about 31 years old! I also have a 10 year old black leather jacket that I can’t seem to part with. I don’t wear it anymore but I can’t seem to get rid of it! Good question!

Jen E @ mommablogsalot said:

probably my prom dress, not that I could wear it now if I wanted to…

meredith said:

HAHA, All my clothes are old. Any extra money we have goes to clothes for our ever growing 2 1/2 year old! But I would say the oldest thing I wear is a pair of sneakers that are from 1998, for some reason they have never gotten holes, but they are for walking the dogs in the rain or other messy activities.

Love your blog layout! How cute!

Mama Zen said:

I still have a leather jacket that I bought when I was 16!

Qtpies7 said:

I am pretty sure the oldest clothes I own is a sweatshirt with my senior class on it. I don’t think I have anything older than that.
I did go on to give birth in it to my third child, so now it has even more sentimental value, lol.
I graduated in 1989, so it is 19 years old. This coming summer with be my 20th reunion! Yikes!

Kelly said:

i have a beautiful skirt that is 100% silk and a gorgeous cami to go with it. i bought it when i was 17 and have yet to wear it. but i can’t part with it b/c it’s so beautiful! i turn 27 in two weeks so that would make the outfit roughly 10 years old. i should break it out next summer. it’s really pretty!

Jamie said:

My oldest peice of clothing is probably my underwear. i’m very bad about getting new ones on a regular basis. i know, gross, right?

Jennifer said:

I have a Race T-shirt that I still wear with PJ pants. I did a fun run a month after we got married in 1991.

Muthering Heights said:

I have a shirt that my mom used to wear in the late 70’s. It became a nightshirt for me when I was little, and I hung on to it until it fit me as a regular shirt. It’s still in great condition, and I love wearing it!

Tracey said:

I have a buttery soft suede jacket that belonged to my mom. One gross fact is that there is a spit-up stain on it from me when I was a baby!

It’s about 35 years old. (The jacket, and the stain…) LOL

Melissa said:

A jacket that I wore in Junior High… so, let’s see… I guess it’s about 17 years old. Now ask me if I still wear that jacket …. :)

happyathome said:

Wow, that would have to be a velvet chocolate brown vest that is from the 30’s, it is fitted and has the same velvet buttons all down the front. That would make it about 70 plus years old! I think I have worn it once, and I am 39 years old! Stop by my blog for a little venting.

Jo said:

a 10 year old pair of jeans

Pamela Kramer said:

I still have my concert shirt from U2’s Joshua Tree Tour. LOL - That was about 20 years ago. Goodness!

sagemom said:

A shirt that DH caught at a UH vball game 10 years ago.

diana said:

probably an old t-shirt of my dads. Its a Miami Hurricanes shirt, we used to LOVE to watch football together. I ended up going to FSU–arch rivals ;-) and he passed away when I was 19 but I still remember how proud I was to watch with him every week

Colleen said:

I hate to shop for them, so my oldest piece of clothing is my bathing suit. probably about 5 years old now.

Amy-Happy Momma said:

Hmm…I have some clothes from the one doll I had and I have my 15th birthday dress.

maria said:

For me? i recycle my clothes often, the oldest item of clothing I have is probably only 10 years old. But bags? I have one I bought almost 20 years ago.

I do have baby clothes from the oldest, that I held onto, that, shockingly enough are almost 19.

Aloha Monkey said:

I think a pair of size 10 CK jeans that I wore during my “skinny” days. I’m keeping them around as a gauge to get back to that size (I hope).

CoolProducts said:

Oh boy.. I’d have to say that it’s my father old Airborne olive green T-shirt. He was an airborne ranger and a green beret and served in Vietnam. It’s got a skull holding a dagger and a rifle wearing a red beret with the text “U.S. paratroopers don’t die, they just go to he** to regroup”! It always gets looks and I always loved wearing it in my old fraternity and getting their disapproving glares!

Fun question!

Tena said:

I have a few sweat shirts that I wore when I was in High School. Nothing beats a nice worn in sweat shirt, so comfy!!! Don’t mind the holes, it adds character!

matt said:

I actually have a t-shirt from elementary school. Our school did a shirt with the names of everyone in the class printed on the back of it. Obviously can’t wear it anymore, but I always felt like it was a part of my childhood that I didn’t want to throw out.

thefarmerfiles said:

I have some baby clothes thanks to my mother, as well as some old girl scout uniforms she couldn’t bare to part with LOL!

Sheila said:

My jeans. They have holes in them like designer jeans only they are not designer and I didn’t pay for the holes. They came from 15 years of wear and tear.

My kids friends always comment: Sweet jeans, where did you get them? lol

medstudentwife said:

I have a couple of vintage pieces that I bought at a second hand store…. but I don’t think they count.

And I have a baby dress, that I wore for my first “photo”, now dressing a stuffed rabbit… but I don’t think that counts…

I have two blouses that I bought between 1983 and 1985 and three pair of shoes from the same time period. I still wear them now and then.

I gave away a bunch of clothes from 20 years or so ago about 6 months ago - realized I’m never going to get into them again :S

Jess NBP said:

My oldest piece of clothing would probably something from when I was in HS freshman year.

Mary @ Adventures in Mommyland said:

I don’t have alot of old clothes anymore since I gained and lost so much weight when I was pregnant and then after. But I do have some old jackets that I had in high school, maybe even middle school. And for a long time I had these soccer socks that still fit me from 5th grade.

Stacey said:

Oops I didn’t mean to sign up, I forgot to play—AGAIN! But I can answer this–I’d say my wedding dress.

Kelly@SHE-POWER said:

I actually have quite a few items of clothing that I have owned for more than 7 years (so from my 20s) and they still look good because they were quality pieces and are rarely worn. I can be a bit faddish with clothes. I fall in love with an item and then I might wear it to death, then one day I’ll see somethign old and think “that’s so lovely” and wear it for the first time in a year.

But my oldest item of clothing would be cut off denim jeans that were full length Levi 501s before I split the knee. These are my backpacking or holiday shorts and I ahve owned them since I was 21. That would be 16 years now. Amazing huh?

They’re a bit tight in the waist since Bunny came along, but I WILL GET COMFORTABLY BACK INTO THEM!

Kila said:

I still have things from 1988, when I was 18. Wait, I do have older items–my mom gave me some “keepsake” clothing items from when I was a toddler.

Kila said:

Thought of something else–my Grandpa’s fighter pilot jacket from WWII (he flew P51’s).

Sher :) said:

I think it would have to be an old pair of pajamas. I can’t seem to let them go. hehehe

Snowbird said:

I actually own a sweater that I wore in high school. I am now 70 years old so you do the math. It is a red V neck long sleeved orlon sweater. I haven’t worn it in years and years but I loved that sweater and can’t bear to part with it.

Snowbird said:

I actually thought of something else. I have a baby dress from when I was a baby. So it would be 70 years old!!!
